Up to two million of the state’s lowest-income people may lose health insurance due to federal changes. Bonta wants to lead the charge to stop that.

Assembly Health Committee Chair Mia Bonta opened an informational hearing Tuesday with a stark warning: proposed federal cuts to Medicaid and related health programs would strip billions of dollars from California’s health care system, leaving millions of residents without coverage and placing severe strain on hospitals, clinics and county safety nets.

“We've been on a tour looking across the state of California at what, for our health care infrastructure and our providers, are the most important for us to be able to address right now, at this moment, as we go back into the legislative session,” Bonta said.

Earlier this month, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1318, which ensures nonprofits in the Golden State can continue to receive state funding should their federal nonprofit status be revoked due to political targeting. The bill, which was authored by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) and sponsored by CalNonprofits, clarifies that nonprofits need only have either state or federal tax-exempt status, not both, to be eligible to receive contracts, grants and other forms of support from the state.
