As we move into the holiday season, I want to share my deep gratitude for the privilege of representing such a resilient and outspoken community. These past weeks have been marked by uncertainty and national turmoil, yet one thing remains steady: the strength and solidarity of the people of Oakland, Alameda, and Emeryville.
When federal agents threatened to descend on the Bay, our neighbors stood shoulder-to-shoulder with immigrant families. When gun violence shook our schools, students organized and demanded the right to feel safe on campus. When the country endured the longest government shutdown in history, local nonprofits and everyday residents stepped up to support those left without a paycheck or food assistance.
In this season defined by thankfulness, joy, and community, I remain committed to leading from the ground up, lifting our district’s values into the halls of power and ensuring the needs of East Bay families stay front and center.

Team Bonta joined the Alameda Food Bank for the official opening of its new space at the Island Community Market on West Ranger Ave. With federal instability and cuts to nutrition programs that working families rely on, local food resources are more essential than ever.
From the 700 Coast Guard families who went unpaid during the federal shutdown to the tens of thousands affected by CalFresh pauses, the Food Bank has been a lifeline, providing stability, dignity, and nourishment on the island for 45 years.

California is Ready to Hold Federal Agents Accountable.
Californians are encouraged to use this form to report potentially unlawful activity by federal agents operating in California, including personnel from ICE, CBP, or federalized National Guard units. While federal officers have broad authority to enforce federal law, they must still act within legal limits. Examples of potential violations include excessive force, unlawful searches or arrests, wrongful detentions, interference with voting, or other civil-rights abuses.

That’s why I’ve been traveling across California to hear directly from providers, advocates, and patients about how the state can respond to HR 1 and protect care for working families. I look forward to bringing these firsthand insights into legislative action in the new year.
New Tax Breaks for Oakland Small Businesses?
A new proposal from Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee and Councilmembers Ramachandran and Unger would provide a one-year local tax exemption for small and newly established businesses starting in 2027. The measure must first be approved by the City Council before it can appear on the June ballot for voter consideration. Learn more.
Rest in Peace Oakland Legend - Coach John Beam
Oakland is mourning the loss of a community giant. Coach John Beam’s influence extended far beyond the football field; he was a mentor, a teacher, and a constant source of guidance for thousands of young people.
Through his work at Skyline High School and Laney College, he opened doors to degrees, scholarships, and professional opportunities for generations of Oakland athletes. His pride in his players, his love for this city, and the consistency of his support reflect the best of who we are.
My family is holding his loved ones, his wife, Cindi; his daughters, Monica and Sonjha; his grandchildren; and every Oaklander touched by his life in our hearts.
Our work for the district is only possible because of the dedicated staff who show up every day on behalf of our constituents.
Monica has been promoted to Legislative Director after four years of exceptional service. She has played a key role in advancing landmark work on digital equity, food access, candidate protections, and support for survivors of human trafficking. Her leadership strengthens our ability to deliver bold legislation.
We are also thrilled to welcome Naomi, joining us through the Assembly Fellowship Program. With a background in public safety and criminal justice policy, she brings a sharp commitment to community-centered policymaking that will serve our district well.
